Area of expertise

Overview

Melinda acts for local, national and international workers compensation insurers. She works directly with the insurer’s clients such as businesses and individuals in providing claim management strategies to assist with reducing the costs incurred of their claims.

Melinda’s past employment history includes working with the Hobart City Council’s legal department with a focus on public liability claims and she then moved onto an international insurer gaining experience in workers compensation claims management.

Experience

Melinda provides tactical, plain language advice to her clients which identifies the core issues of the matter so that timeframes and strategies can be developed to minimise claim costs to her clients.

Examples of her experience include:

  • Obtaining reasonably arguable case determinations from the Workers Rehabilitation and Compensation Tribunal to cease compensation payments being made to injured workers;
  • Providing complex common law and quantum advice to insurers regarding large loss claims;
  • Having a focus on recoveries of workers compensation payments from negligent third parties;
  • Providing sound dispute strategies to her clients so that reasonable and quick resolutions of injured worker’s claims can be obtained; and
  • Acting for insurers and their clients in conciliation conferences in the Workers Rehabilitation and Compensation Tribunal.

Melinda is a member of the Australian Insurance Law Association and a committee member of the Southern Young Lawyers Committee in association with the Law Society of Tasmania.

She appears in the Workers Rehabilitation and Compensation Tribunal and the Magistrates Court.
