Areas of expertise


Simon has significant experience in the IT sector having acted on a range of complex IT procurements both for vendors and customers in a variety of industries including financial services, government, health, logistics and energy. Simon regularly advises on IT transactions and disputes including complex strategic and business process outsourcing transactions, system integrations and cloud and data analytics. As part of his IT practice, Simon regularly advises on privacy issues.

Simon’s practice also encompasses advising research organisations, universities and commercial entities on R&D arrangements and exploitation of intellectual property assets. He advises on a range of issues including research joint ventures and collaborations, contract research and licensing arrangements. Simon has also advised on the intellectual property aspects of several IPOs in the biotechnology sector.

Simon has been voted by his peers as one of Australia’s best lawyers in the field of Information Technology in the 10th Edition of The Best Lawyers TM.


Before joining Page Seager, Simon was a Special Counsel in K&L Gates Commercial and Outsourcing Group. He has also worked in-house in Australia as a Managing Counsel – GTS with IBM and Senior Counsel with CA Technologies. During his time in private practice he has completed secondments with several prominent research organisations. Simon’s in-house and secondment experience, allows him to provide commercially practical advice to achieve pragmatic and cost effective outcomes for his clients.

Examples of the type of transactions Simon has been involved in include:

  • Advising on outsourcing arrangements including strategic outsourcing agreements, business processing outsourcing and managed services;
  • Advising on a variety of system integration contracts across a broad range of industries including financial services, transport and utilities;
  • Advising on a variety of services related agreements more recently involving SaaS and IaaS or other ‘cloud’ based service arrangements;
  • Acting on matters involving data analytics including providing advice on privacy compliance, security, data management and protection;
  • Advising on a variety of software licensing, support, maintenance and development arrangements across various sectors;
  • Advice on various troubled IT related projects including remediation strategies and dispute resolution;
  • Advice on the transition of intellectual property and IT systems associated with company merger and divestment activities or as asset sales or acquisitions;
  • Advising several prominent research organisations on their R&D activities including joint ventures, collaborations, licensing and other research activities; and

Simon regularly presents, publishes and provides commentary on technology issues including privacy, agile methodologies, security and data analytics.
