Areas of expertise


Sophie is an experienced health lawyer with significant expertise in civil, coronial and disciplinary matters. She has considerable experience both in private practice and in-house, having previously held several positions (including Head of Medical Defence Services) at Avant Mutual Group Limited, Australia’s largest medical defence organisation.


Sophie has experience across all health law matters including:


    • Advising public and private hospitals, and individual medical practitioners, in relation to civil claims, coronial investigations and employment disputes, including overseeing all civil and coroner’s claims for Victoria, Tasmania and the ACT managed by Avant (over 200 claims);
    • Advising medical practitioners in relation to civil proceedings, coronial investigations and inquests; training disputes; employment disputes; disciplinary proceedings (Medical Board of Australia);
    • Providing after hours medico legal advice to medical practitioners for urgent advice in relation to any legal issues including:
      • Adverse events
      • Capacity of patients for decision making
      • Refusal of treatment
      • Death certificates / patient deaths and reporting to the Coroner
      • Boundary transgressions
      • Training disputes
      • Criminal offences / allegations
      • Disciplinary matters

Providing education sessions to medical practitioners both written; face to face and by Webinar in relation to emerging issues facing doctors in the health sector.
