David graduated from the University of Tasmania in 1986. He commenced practice apprenticed to the now Mr Justice Blow in Devonport. He became a partner at Oldham & Temple-Smith (subsequently Temple-Smith Barclay) in 1993 and resigned to relocate to Hobart in 2003.
David now practises in general litigation, workers' compensation, general insurance litigation and industrial law.
Additionally, David practises in the Administrative Appeals Tribunal, the Anti-Discrimination Tribunal and in more serious criminal matters. He appears as lead counsel in criminal and civil trials in the Supreme Court, the Court of Criminal Appeal and the Full Court of Tasmania. Additionally he appears as lead counsel in the Industrial Relations Commission (both State and Federal), the Administrative Appeals Tribunal, the Anti-Discrimination Tribunal and the Workers' Compensation Tribunal.
David is a member of the committee of the Tasmanian Bar Association and is a past President. In his spare time he enjoys sailing having competed in a number of ocean races including Sydney to Hobart and Melbourne to Hobart races. He has also sailed in the inaugural Launceston to Hobart yacht race.
